What is Parfums de Marly Delina?

Parfums de Marly is a French niche house founded in 2009 by Julien Sprecher^[1], named after the Château de Marly built by Louis XIV in 1679^[2]. The house position is “modern luxury rooted in 18th-century French perfumery”, and the bottles all carry the equestrian motif of a rearing horse. Delina launched in 2017^[3] as the flagship of the women’s collection.

The composition is credited to Quentin Bisch^[4], a French perfumer at Givaudan^[5] whose other credits include Mugler Angel Nova, Cacharel Yes I Am, Diptyque Eau Capitale, and several other Parfums de Marly compositions. The heart is a soft floral built around Turkish rose and peony, with Petalia (an IFF molecule that reads as a clean lily-of-the-valley-rose hybrid), white musk and vanilla warming the structure. What does Delina actually smell like?

Delina opens with a sharp, almost tart rhubarb top · green, slightly sour, freshly cut. Within two minutes the litchi softens the edge and the bergamot lifts it; nutmeg and black currant sit underneath, adding a tart-spicy depth that stops the opening reading as too pink. By minute ten the rhubarb has receded and the Turkish rose has arrived · not a heavy, jammy rose, but a clean, dewy one supported by peony, Petalia, vanilla and a soft musk.

From hour one onwards the base does the work. Cashmeran gives that distinctive PDM “warm clean laundry” character that runs through most of the house’s compositions; the incense and Haitian vetiver add quiet structure underneath; cedar dries the dry-down and a touch of caramel adds a softly sweet edge. The rhubarb-rose signature · why it’s polarising

Delina divides opinion sharply. Among rose lovers it is widely held to be the best modern commercial rose composition of the last decade. Among gourmand and oud lovers it is dismissed as “too clean”, “too pink”, or “candyfloss perfume”. Both reactions are valid · they reflect what the fragrance is doing.

Three things drive the polarisation:

• The rhubarb top. Rhubarb is an unusual note in mainstream perfumery. It reads as fresh-green-tart-sweet, like crushed stalks in a kitchen. People who have not encountered it before sometimes register it as “metallic” or “vegetable” on first sniff. After three or four wears the brain reclassifies it and the note becomes the part most wearers love.
• The cashmeran base. Cashmeran (IFF’s woody-musk molecule^[8], sometimes referred to as “clean musk”) is the molecule that gives Delina its signature soft-laundry feel. It is what makes the fragrance feel “expensive and clean” to fans, and “boring and synthetic” to detractors. I wore Parfums de Marly Delina for three days in April 2026 from a 5ml decant — once at the office (climate-controlled, ~22°C), once on a 90-minute walk through Sefton Park on a mild spring morning (15°C, low wind), and once at a Friday dinner indoors at The Florist on Hardman Street, ten at the table. Notes from each:

• Hour 0-1 (office): Two sprays to the inner left wrist at 8.45am. The rhubarb opening lands first as a fresh, slightly tart green-pink note that I initially registered as almost metallic — within ninety seconds the litchi softened the edge and the bergamot brought lift. By minute fifteen the rhubarb had receded and the Turkish rose was already pushing forward.
• Hour 2-4 (walk): Mild spring air kept the rose-peony-Petalia heart at its most legible. Sefton Park in April is full of competing floral notes from the cherry trees and the magnolias, and Delina’s rose held its own without disappearing into the background — the peony reads quietly powdery and the Petalia adds a clean lily-of-the-valley-rose hybrid that I have not encountered in any other commercial rose composition.
• Hour 5-8 (dinner): Warm restaurant, candle-light, the cashmeran came forward by hour five as the signature soft-laundry warmth the molecule is famous for. The dry-down at hour seven was unmistakeable Delina — rose, peony, cashmeran, vanilla and a quiet caramel sweetness at the very bottom. Sillage at the table was a clear arm’s-length bubble; one of the women at the next table asked what I was wearing as we left.
• Hour 9-12 (overnight on a worn jumper): Sprayed once onto a cream cashmere jumper at the start of the day. By 7am the next morning the jumper still smelt clearly of Delina — closer to the cashmeran-vanilla dry-down than the rhubarb-rose top, but unmistakeably present.

Comparing the TFW Delina to the original on the same day, sprayed on the opposite wrist: the rhubarb-litchi opening is the closest convergence point (the two are almost identical for the first ten minutes); the Turkish rose heart at hour two sits within a hair’s breadth on both wrists; the cashmeran base at hour five is where the two diverge slightly — the TFW version’s cashmeran reads a touch more pronounced, where the PDM original has a faintly more refined integration of cashmeran-vanilla-caramel at the very tail of the dry-down.
