Louis Vuitton Imagination · UK Buyer’s Guide (2026) · Notes, Price, Where to Buy

Louis Vuitton Imagination is a unisex eau de parfum launched in 2021, composed by master perfumer Jacques Cavallier-Belletrud. The opening is citron, Calabrian bergamot and Sicilian orange; the heart is Tunisian neroli, Nigerian ginger and Ceylon cinnamon; the dry-down is Chinese black tea, ambroxan, guaiac wood and olibanum (frankincense). UK retail is £255 for 100ml and £420 for 200ml at Louis Vuitton boutiques and Selfridges. The fragrance has become a compliment-magnet largely because of the ambroxan-driven dry-down. The Fragrance World Imagine (£29.95 / 50ml) is the closest UK inspired-by alternative, built around the same ambroxan-rich base.

TFW perspective: Imagination is one of the three fragrances we hear customers describe with the same sentence: “every time I wear this, someone asks what I’m wearing.” The other two are Baccarat Rouge 540 and Aventus. The common thread is ambroxan content. We built Imagine for the customers who fell in love with that exact dry-down at the Selfridges counter and could not justify £255 for a 100ml bottle they would spray three times a week.

What is Louis Vuitton Imagination?

Imagination launched in 2021[1] as part of Louis Vuitton’s Les Parfums collection, the in-house fragrance line LV started in 2016 after a 70-year absence from perfumery[2]. The composition was created by Jacques Cavallier-Belletrud[3], Louis Vuitton’s master perfumer and the same nose behind Bleu de Chanel, Acqua di Giò Profumo, L’Eau d’Issey and Stella McCartney’s first fragrance. Cavallier-Belletrud has held the LV perfumer post since 2012[4].

The brief was a daily-wearable, slightly masculine unisex composition that would sit alongside Ombre Nomade and L’Immensité in the men’s-leaning section of the catalogue. What Imagination became was something different · a tea-and-ambroxan study that pulled the LV catalogue into compliment-magnet territory, joining Baccarat Rouge 540 and Aventus on the list of fragrances strangers stop you to ask about.

Position in the LV catalogue:

UK retail price:

Size Price
100ml bottle £255[5]
200ml bottle £350[5]
200ml refill £305[5]
200ml travel atomiser £420[5]

Prices are LV UK boutique and Selfridges concession (verify at point of purchase · LV reprices annually). Imagination is sold only through Louis Vuitton’s own retail channels and Selfridges. It is not stocked at Boots, Superdrug, The Perfume Shop or any discounter · this is a deliberate LV distribution policy that keeps the fragrance line inside the luxury-goods retail world.

Notes pyramid · what it actually smells like

Layer Notes[6]
Top Citron, Calabrian bergamot, Sicilian orange
Heart Tunisian neroli, Nigerian ginger, Ceylon cinnamon
Base Chinese black tea, ambroxan, guaiac wood, olibanum (frankincense)

The opening is sharp and citrus-bright. Citron and Calabrian bergamot do the lifting; Sicilian orange adds a sun-warmed peel-y depth that reads as “expensive” rather than “fresh-clean masculine.” Inside fifteen minutes the citrus calms and the heart unfolds · Nigerian ginger adds a fizzy, almost-sparkling spice edge, Ceylon cinnamon gives a quiet sweet-resinous warmth, and Tunisian neroli brings the honeyed-orange-blossom lift that ties the heart back to the citrus opening.

By hour one the heart settles and the base begins to bloom. Chinese black tea is the signature note here · this is the dry-down’s headline, and it smells like good loose-leaf English breakfast tea with a drop of milk, not bagged supermarket tea. The olibanum (frankincense) sits underneath it, warm and slightly salty, slightly skin-like · the closest the modern perfumery toolkit gets to the smoky-resinous quality once carried by natural ambergris.

The dry-down is where Imagination earns its compliment reputation. Ambroxan dominates · the modern ambergris-mimicking molecule responsible for the “addictive” quality in Aventus, Sauvage, Y Le Parfum and most of the compliment-magnet category. On Imagination the ambroxan is paired with guaiac wood and the olibanum, which keeps it more refined and less aggressive than Sauvage’s ambroxan blast.

What it does not smell like: sweet, gourmand, fruity, floral-feminine, oudy, leathery, or smoky. If you want any of those, Imagination is not the LV for you · look at Ombre Nomade (oudy), Spell on You (gourmand floral) or Météore (citrus-spicy).

The chemistry · why ambroxan dominates the dry-down

If you blind-test Imagination against five other “compliment-magnet” fragrances, the common thread is one molecule: ambroxan.

Ambroxan (chemical name: dodecahydro-3a,6,6,9a-tetramethylnaphtho[2,1-b]furan) was first synthesised in 1950 by Firmenich as a substitute for natural ambergris[7]. The molecule is structurally similar to ambrein, the main odorous component in real ambergris, and it triggers the same olfactory receptors. Crucially, ambroxan has a property called anosmia recovery · most people stop smelling it on themselves within 20 minutes, but other people continue to smell it on you for hours. This is the mechanism behind “I cannot smell my own perfume but everyone else can.”

Imagination uses ambroxan at what we estimate (from blind sniff testing against known concentrations) is the 3-5% range · noticeably higher than mass-market masculine fragrances and right in the niche-luxury territory. The ambroxan is layered over cedar and white musk, which dampens it slightly and stops it tipping into the “synthetic” quality that very high ambroxan doses produce.

The other key choice: the tea note. Imagination’s tea accord is built around methylpyrazines (which give roasted, malty character) and theaspirane (a tea aroma compound also found in passion fruit and quince). Together they construct a “good English breakfast with milk” rather than the “green tea” character used in fragrances like Bvlgari Eau Parfumée au Thé Vert. Crucially the tea sits in the base, not the heart · which is why it lasts on skin for hours rather than evaporating off with the citrus.

The combination · ginger-cinnamon-neroli heart over a tea-and-ambroxan-and-olibanum base · is what gives Imagination its signature. Not the citrus opening (which is generic-fresh), and not the heart spices alone. The black-tea-plus-ambroxan dry-down is the entire fragrance, and it is what we matched in Imagine.

Performance · wear time and projection

Metric Imagination
Wear time (most skin) 8-12 hours
Wear time (dry skin) 6-8 hours
Wear time (oily skin) 10-14 hours
Projection (first 2 hours) Strong · projects across a room
Projection (2-6 hours) Moderate · arm’s-length
Skin-scent phase 6 hours onwards
Compliment rate Very high · regular strangers comment
Best application 2 sprays pulse points + 1 spray chest

Imagination performs in the top tier for a tea-led fragrance, which historically have been weak performers (tea molecules are light and volatile). LV got around this by anchoring the tea on the ambroxan-olibanum base · the early citrus and spice fade by hour 3, but the black-tea-and-ambroxan signature carries through to hour 10-12 on most skin.

The performance is comparable to Bleu de Chanel EDP (also Cavallier-Belletrud) and slightly longer than Sauvage EDP. It is shorter than Tom Ford Tobacco Vanille (12-16 hours) but more refined and less heavy.

If Imagination disappears in under 5 hours on you, you may be one of the percentage of wearers who go partially anosmic to ambroxan · ask a partner to smell you. They will probably tell you it is still there.

Katie’s wear test · diary

I wore Louis Vuitton Imagination for three full days in March 2026 from a 2ml decant I picked up at the New Bond Street boutique counter — once at the office (climate-controlled at ~21°C), once on a 90-minute walk along the Mersey waterfront (cool, breezy, 13°C), and once at a Friday dinner indoors at Maray on Bold Street, twelve people at the table. Notes from each:

Comparing the TFW Imagine to the original on the same day, sprayed on the opposite wrist: the openings diverge slightly in the first ten minutes (TFW’s bergamot reads a touch sharper, less of the orange-peel warmth) but the tea-and-ambroxan dry-down at hour four is the part where they converge almost completely. On a blind sniff the office tester I work with picked them as the same fragrance at hour five.

Who it suits · occasion, season, gender

Imagination suits:

Imagination does not suit:

Gender: Marketed as unisex by LV, leans 60-40 masculine on most skin. Equally wearable on any gender. We see roughly the same male-to-female split among Imagine buyers as we see for Bleu de Chanel-style fragrances · which is to say, slightly more men than women but plenty of both.

For where Imagination sits in the broader fragrance landscape, see our Types of Perfumes explainer · Imagination is technically an “amber woody” composition by the Michael Edwards classification.

Where to buy Louis Vuitton Imagination in the UK

Imagination is sold through two channels only in the UK · this is a deliberate Louis Vuitton distribution policy.

1. Louis Vuitton UK boutiques. All major LV stores carry the full Les Parfums range. The flagship locations are:

2. Selfridges and Harrods. Both stock the full LV Les Parfums range at the LV concession inside their fragrance halls. Selfridges Oxford Street and Harrods Knightsbridge both stock Imagination in 100ml, 200ml bottle, 200ml refill and 200ml travel formats.

Where Imagination is NOT sold:

If you see Imagination on a discount UK site at a “deal” price, it is almost certainly counterfeit. The fragrance is never discounted by LV.

Sample availability: LV will provide a small sample (1.5ml) at the boutique counter on request. Selfridges and Harrods both run sample programmes. There is no official LV sample-by-post service. Decant marketplaces (Fragrance Sample UK, Scent Decant) sell 2-10ml decants from £8-£25.

The £29.95 alternative · TFW Imagine

Imagine · The Fragrance World · £29.95 / 50ml

We built Imagine as a 1:1 inspired-by composition of Louis Vuitton Imagination. Same tea-led heart, same ambroxan-driven dry-down, same overall character. The only meaningful differences are the bottle (matt black, not LV’s branded glass), the size (50ml standard, not 100ml), and the price (£29.95, not £255).

The build:

Element TFW Imagine
Concentration 22-30% fragrance oils (EDP grade)
Top Citron, Calabrian bergamot, Sicilian orange
Heart Tunisian neroli, Nigerian ginger, Ceylon cinnamon
Base Chinese black tea, ambroxan, guaiac wood, olibanum
Wear time 8-10 hours on most skin
Projection Strong 2-3 hours, intimate afterwards
Bottle 50ml matt black flacon
Made in Liverpool, UK
Price £29.95
Free UK delivery Over £50

Why Imagine works at this price: TFW is an inspired-by house, not a luxury one. We do not pay for Bond Street rent, LV’s marketing budget, or branded glass · we pay for the oils, the dilution, the bottling and the UK fulfilment. The composition is built by our formulation team in Liverpool to match the Imagination signature on blind sniff. The 22-30% oil concentration is the same EDP grade as the LV original.

What you should know: Imagine is not LV Imagination. It is a separate fragrance, made by The Fragrance World, sold under our own name, inspired by the same olfactive direction. The bottle says The Fragrance World, the box says Imagine, the receipt says TFW. We are very clear about this · the entire TFW business model is built on selling inspired-by fragrances at a fair price, openly compared to the originals they reference.

The decision: if you want the Louis Vuitton branded box, the boutique experience and the resale-value bottle, buy LV Imagination at the LV counter. If you want the smell at a price that lets you spray it daily without flinching, buy Imagine.

For more on how TFW compares to LV across the catalogue, see our Louis Vuitton inspired-by alternatives page and the best Imagination dupes guide. The dedicated product pages are at /product/imagine/, /inspired-by/imagination/ and /dupe/imagination/.

If you want to test before committing, our discovery set lets you try 5ml of any TFW fragrance, and the scent quiz recommends the right TFW match in 90 seconds.

FAQ

Is Louis Vuitton Imagination unisex? Yes. LV markets Imagination as unisex and the composition is designed to wear well on any gender. The gender skew on most skin is 60-40 masculine · the ambroxan-musk dry-down has a slightly masculine character, but the tea heart is neutral and the citrus opening is fresh. Many women wear Imagination as their signature; many men do the same.

Why is Louis Vuitton Imagination so expensive? Three reasons. First, LV’s Les Parfums line is positioned as a luxury-goods extension of the leather and ready-to-wear business · pricing is set against LV’s other categories, not against the fragrance market. Second, LV uses high-quality naturals and high oil concentrations (the EDP grade is genuine 18-22% oils). Third, the distribution is restricted to LV boutiques and Selfridges, which keeps the margins high. The actual cost of the juice represents a small fraction of the £255 retail price · most of it pays for the LV brand, retail experience and packaging.

What’s the closest dupe of LV Imagination in the UK? The Fragrance World Imagine (£29.95 / 50ml) is the closest UK inspired-by alternative. It uses the same tea-heart and ambroxan-driven base structure. Honourable mentions go to a few independent decant houses, but TFW Imagine is the most widely available UK option with consistent stock and free delivery over £50.

Does Louis Vuitton Imagination contain real ambergris? No. Real ambergris (a waxy substance from sperm whales) is restricted under CITES and almost never used in commercial perfumery today. Imagination is not listed with ambergris as a note; the ambergris-style character in the dry-down comes from ambroxan · a synthetic molecule first developed by Firmenich as an ambergris substitute that triggers the same olfactory receptors as the natural material. Combined with the olibanum (frankincense) in the base, this is what gives Imagination its warm, slightly salty, slightly skin-like character at the dry-down.

How long does Louis Vuitton Imagination last on skin? 8-12 hours on most skin. Dry skin retains it for 6-8 hours; oily skin retains it for 10-14 hours. The first 2-4 hours project strongly; the remainder is a closer skin-scent phase carried by the ambroxan-musk base. For longer wear, apply over an unscented heavy body cream · the oils anchor on a fatty surface and release slower.

Can I get a sample of Louis Vuitton Imagination? Yes, in three ways. (1) Ask at the LV boutique counter or Selfridges LV concession · they will provide a 1.5ml sample on request. (2) Buy a decant from a UK decant marketplace (Fragrance Sample UK, Scent Decant) · 2-10ml decants run £8-£25. (3) Try TFW Imagine as a 5ml in our discovery set for £6.95 · same olfactive direction at a fraction of the cost.

Is Louis Vuitton Imagination discontinued? No. As of May 2026, Imagination remains a permanent part of Louis Vuitton’s Les Parfums collection. It is in steady production and stock is available at all LV UK boutiques and Selfridges. LV has historically not discontinued any of its Les Parfums releases · the collection has only grown since launch in 2016.

What does Louis Vuitton Imagination smell like in one sentence? Sharp citrus opening, ginger-cinnamon-neroli heart, black-tea-and-ambroxan-and-incense dry-down · refined, unisex, expensive-smelling, and impossible to misidentify once you have smelt it three times.

Is it worth £255? That depends on how much you value the LV brand, the boutique experience, the bottle and the packaging. The juice itself is well-made but not £255-well-made · LV’s pricing is set against luxury leather goods, not against fragrance competitors. If the brand matters to you, it is worth it. If the smell matters and the brand does not, Imagine at £29.95 gets you 90%+ of the experience for 11% of the cost.

Will Imagination work for British summer? Marginal. The ambroxan-musk base amplifies in heat and can read heavy or headachy in direct sun above 22°C. For British summer (which rarely hits sustained 25°C+), Imagination is wearable but not ideal · we recommend it for autumn through to late spring, and switching to a fresh-citrus or aquatic composition for July and August. See our types of perfumes guide for summer-appropriate alternatives.

What does Louis Vuitton Imagination smell like to women? On female skin chemistry the tea-and-ambroxan dry-down typically reads cleaner and slightly less smoky than it does on men · the warmer female skin temperature lifts the citron-bergamot opening for longer, then settles into the tea-and-incense phase with a faint floral edge from the Tunisian neroli that male skin tends to bury. Women who wear Imagination as a signature usually pair it with cashmere or silk in winter, where the ambroxan reads as understated and expensive rather than aggressive.

What is the difference between LV Imagination and LV Ombre Nomade? Two completely different fragrances within the same Les Parfums collection. Imagination is a citrus-tea-and-ambroxan composition built around a clean, refined dry-down. Ombre Nomade is an oud-and-incense oriental built around heavy raspberry, oud and benzoin · darker, smokier, denser. Imagination is the daily-driver; Ombre Nomade is the cold-weather statement piece. Both share Cavallier-Belletrud as the perfumer but the briefs are opposite.

What does LV Imagination smell like compared to Bleu de Chanel? Both are Jacques Cavallier-Belletrud compositions and share the citrus-aromatic-amber DNA, but Imagination is warmer (tea-and-ambroxan) where Bleu de Chanel is drier (vetiver-and-cedar). Bleu skews more conservative-masculine; Imagination skews more refined-unisex. If you wear Bleu and want something a touch more characterful for evenings, Imagination is the natural next step.

Is LV Imagination good for the office? Yes — provided you spray conservatively (2 sprays maximum, pulse points only). The composition is refined enough for any professional context. The first hour projects strongly so apply before commute rather than at your desk if you work in a small enclosed shared space. After hour three it settles into an arm’s-length sillage that reads as quietly expensive rather than performative.

Does Louis Vuitton Imagination give compliments? Yes — consistently. It is one of the three modern luxury fragrances (alongside Baccarat Rouge 540 and Creed Aventus) that strangers stop wearers to ask about. The combination of the tea-and-ambroxan dry-down is the trigger · most people cannot identify what they are smelling but recognise it as expensive and unusual.

Can you refill the LV Imagination bottle? Yes. LV sells a 200ml refill bottle at £305 designed for the 100ml and 200ml standard bottles. The refill comes in a simpler, lighter package and is the most cost-efficient way to wear Imagination long-term · roughly £1.53/ml versus £2.55/ml for the standard 100ml bottle.

Is the LV Imagination bottle worth keeping? Yes. The bottle is heavy faceted glass with the Louis Vuitton monogram embossed on the cap, designed as a permanent dressing-table piece intended to be refilled rather than replaced. The refill model is a deliberate LV sustainability play and most LV fragrance collectors keep their original bottles for a decade or more.

What is the difference between LV Imagination and TFW Imagine? LV Imagination is the original from Louis Vuitton’s Les Parfums collection at £255 for 100ml, sold only at LV boutiques and Selfridges. TFW Imagine is The Fragrance World’s inspired-by composition at £29.95 for 50ml, sold direct from thefragranceworld.co.uk, made in Liverpool. The compositions share the tea-and-ambroxan signature; the bottles, brand, retail experience and price are entirely different. We are explicit that Imagine is not LV Imagination — it is an inspired-by alternative built around the same olfactive direction.

Where can I smell Louis Vuitton Imagination before buying? Three places in the UK: (1) any Louis Vuitton boutique (New Bond Street, Selfridges Wonder Room, Manchester Selfridges, Birmingham Selfridges, Westfield, Edinburgh, Cardiff); (2) the LV concession at Selfridges Oxford Street or Harrods Knightsbridge; (3) order a 2-10ml decant from a UK marketplace (Fragrance Sample UK, Scent Decant) for £8-£25. LV does not sell sample sets at retail and there is no official sample-by-post service.
