A dupe and a counterfeit are not the same thing, and the difference is the whole point. A dupe, properly called an inspired-by fragrance, is sold under the maker’s own name and describes itself honestly as an alternative to a designer scent. A counterfeit copies the designer’s name, logo, bottle and packaging to trick you into thinking it is the real thing. The first is legal and honest. The second is illegal and dishonest. Words like fake, replica and copy usually mean counterfeit, and they are worth being careful about.

What an inspired-by fragrance is
An inspired-by fragrance is a scent built to resemble a well-known original, sold openly under a different brand. It does not pretend to be the designer’s product. It has its own name, its own bottle and its own identity, and it uses the designer’s name only to describe what it smells like, so you can find it. What a counterfeit is
A counterfeit is a fake. It reproduces the designer’s trademarked name, logo, bottle shape and packaging so that the product looks like the genuine article and is sold as if it were. The intention is to deceive. Counterfeiting is trademark infringement, it breaches consumer protection law, and it is frequently a criminal matter. Because a counterfeit is made by someone hiding behind a designer’s brand, there is usually no Cosmetic Product Safety Report, no accountable Responsible Person and no reliable information about what is in the bottle, which is why counterfeits are the genuine safety risk in this market. What “fake”, “replica” and “copy” usually mean
People search for fake perfume, replica perfume and perfume copies, and the words matter. In practice, “fake” and “replica” almost always describe a counterfeit: a product pretending to be the designer’s own. “Copy” is used loosely and can mean either, so it pays to check. The honest category, the one that is legal and safe, is the one that calls itself inspired-by and sells under its own brand. If a listing is using a designer’s exact name and bottle to sell you something at a fraction of the price, that is not a dupe, it is a fake, and it is the thing to avoid.
How to spot a counterfeit
- It uses the designer’s name and packaging but sells at an impossible price. Genuine designer perfume is not sold at 90 per cent off by an unknown seller.
- The seller is anonymous. No brand identity, no contactable company, often a marketplace listing that appears and disappears.
- No ingredients or safety information. A real cosmetic has an allergen list and an accountable maker; a counterfeit rarely does.
- It claims to be the genuine article. An honest inspired-by fragrance never says it is the designer product. A counterfeit does.
