Why Fragrance Fades (and How to Fix It)
Fragrance evaporates from your skin throughout the day. The rate of evaporation depends on four factors: skin hydration, temperature, oil concentration, and application method. Most people only control one of these (where they spray). Controlling all four is what makes fragrance last.
The 8 Techniques
1. Moisturise before spraying
Dry skin lets fragrance molecules escape faster. Apply unscented moisturiser (or Vaseline on pulse points) 5-10 minutes before spraying. This creates a barrier that slows evaporation. Can add 2-3 hours of wear time with no change to the scent.
2. Spray on pulse points
Pulse points (wrists, neck, behind ears, inner elbows, behind knees) radiate warmth from blood flow. This warmth activates fragrance molecules and projects the scent. For maximum projection, spray neck and behind ears. For personal scent, spray wrists and inner elbows.
3. Do not rub your wrists together
The most common mistake. Friction generates heat that accelerates the breakdown of top note molecules (the light, volatile compounds). This makes the fragrance lose its opening character within minutes. Spray, let it dry naturally.
4. Choose EDP concentration
This is the single biggest factor. Concentration directly determines longevity:
| Concentration | Oil % | Longevity |
|---|---|---|
| Body Mist | 1-3% | 1-2 hours |
| EDT | 5-15% | 3-5 hours |
| EDP | 15-30% | 6-10 hours |
| TFW (EDP grade) | 22-30% | 6-10 hours |
| Extrait | 20-40% | 8-12+ hours |
5. Layer with body mist
Body mist across your torso + EDP on pulse points = layered scent that lasts. The Fragrance World offers body mists that match core fragrances, designed specifically for layering.
6. Spray clothes and hair
Fabric holds fragrance molecules longer than skin because fibres trap them. Spray from 20cm onto scarves, jacket collars, or cuffs. For hair, spray a brush and run through rather than spraying directly (alcohol can dry hair).
7. Store properly
UV light, heat, and humidity degrade fragrance molecules. Keep bottles in a cool, dark place. A bedroom drawer is ideal. Never in a bathroom (steam and temperature swings). A well-stored fragrance retains potency for 3-5 years.
8. Carry a travel spray for midday top-up
A 5ml travel spray fits in any pocket or bag. One spray per wrist at lunchtime refreshes the scent for the afternoon. The Fragrance World 5ml sprays cost £4.95 and provide approximately 60 sprays.
